Is it time for a third political party?

The current election atmosphere has been interesting if not out right entertaining. Aside from all of the atypical shenanigans, mudslinging, and in fighting it has been a revealing journey into nearly everything that is wrong with our current system. At present it appears to have come down to the presumptive candidate for the GOP, Sen. John McCain while Senators Obama and Clinton are still engaged in heated battle for their party’s nomination. I admit watching with a great deal of interest as we have journeyed to this point in time and the fields have narrowed to the choices we are currently faced with. Admittedly the candidates that I could remotely feel comfortable supporting have long since dropped out of the race leaving us with a serious quandary with regard to who to support. As a conservative, christian I have found that my beliefs are most closely aligned with the platform of the GOP. At least that was before the party was taken over by leadership which is anything but conservative. To my horror and dismay the GOP has become the party of appeasement and political correctness instead of standing for clearly defined principles and standards. I have had the misfortune of watching as republicans have compromised their beliefs and sacrificed core party beliefs to appease democrats or to cave to political correctness.  Pat Buchanan described our two parties as being two wings of the same predator which I agree with completely. So what do we do now? Can a third party work or would it be “dead on arrival” from conception? I don’t think we really want to go through another situation like with Ross Perot which many attribute to having put Bill Clinton in office by taking votes away from the republican candidate. Rather than face that possibility  again many of the people who I talk to tell me that they would rather hold their nose and vote for Sen. McCain even though he seems more like a liberal democrat than even anything that could remotely be considered a moderate republican.  With democrats in control of both houses of congress and having the farthest left leadership possible being in control I think there is little doubt that Sen. McCain would work very closely with his good buddies on the democratic side to bring us more wonderful legislation like we have seen in the past such as the McCain -Feingold bill or the McCain-Kennedy proposal for amnesty.  Sadly, the lines of definition which  differentiate our two current parties has blurred into near oblivion.  Once again we are presented with the possibility of building a viable third party. Even though I doubt that third party candidate would have the remotest possibility of making much of a show during out current election process I do feel that it is certainly time to take a serious look at our current state of affairs and what must be done to correct the situation. Left unchecked I believe we will see little change and a great deal more pandering and empty rhetoric coming from career politicians who are primarily concerned with holding onto their positions for further accumulation of wealth and power and little regard for the well being of their constituency or the good of the country overall.  Two years ago Nancy Pelosi was in the news nearly non stop touting the democrat common sense solutions to the gas problems but we have yet to hear what these solutions are and gas prices have only continued to sky rocket.  On 4/26/08, Chuck Baldwin accepted the nomination for president from the Constitution Party. Chuck Baldwin is a Baptist pastor from Pensacola, FL and embodies all of the core principles and beliefs that are so severely lacking in today’s crop of political wannabes. If nothing else, it is absolutely time to take a look at the party platform and what someone like Mr. Baldwin might mean for our country. Take a few minutes and take a look at the following website which details what the Constitution Party stands for. Chuck Baldwin’s acceptance speech can be heard on link highlighted in this sentence.  My intention is not to advocate doing anything other than giving serious thought to the possibilities that we are currently presented with and making the best decisions possible based on the facts and empirical evidence. Can we really afford to throw the dice or simply hold our nose and gamble the future of our country away on the possibility or hope that we might have that our candidate “might” do what we believe would be best for our country? Wouldn’t it make more sense to demand an end to status quo politics and insist on a genuine change of direction for our country? Our future hangs in the balance and I for one believe the time has come to wrestle control away from the career politicians and good ole boy club and put it back in the hands of the people, where it rightly belongs. I applaud Chuck Baldwin for having the courage and conviction to even be willing to enter the political arena with such a turbulent environment and our society plunging headlong into oblivion like a runaway freight train. It is my sincere belief that Chuck Baldwin would return God to the rightful position of reverence that has been so seriously lacking for far too long now. Our founding fathers realized the importance and relevance of God to our nation and we have seen the result of allowing that to be diminished. The time has come to get back on the right track. God bless America.
